This page covers Voluminous Energy's feature generation for 1.18.1 (0.3) (0.3 Beta 1 to Beta 2). All values are the defaults of the common config file (voluminousenergy-common.toml) and can be changed there.

Technical background

Features are still added in code through Forge's BiomeLoadingEvent, now using Minecraft 1.18's placement modifiers (HeightRangePlacement, InSquarePlacement, CountPlacement, RarityFilter). This is the first version with:

  • deepslate ore variants and Red Saltpeter Ore,
  • an "Exposed Discard Chance" per ore (the chance that a blob touching air is not placed),
  • ore deposits,
  • height anchors updated for the deeper 1.18 world (Galena, Rutile and Eighzo moved down, Cinnabar and Saltpeter up to 320).

The config still calls the per-chunk count "Weight". It was renamed "Count" in 1.18.2.

Ore blob features

What each ore replaces
OreReplaces → places
Saltpeterforge:ore_bearing_ground/colorless_sand → Saltpeter Ore
forge:ore_bearing_ground/red_sand → Red Saltpeter Ore
Bauxite, Cinnabar, Galena, Rutileminecraft:stone_ore_replaceables → regular ore
minecraft:deepslate_ore_replaceables → deepslate ore
Eighzoforge:ore_bearing_ground/end_stone → Eighzo Ore

With an exposed discard chance of 1, any Eighzo blob that touches air is discarded completely. Since much of the End is exposed to the void and to surface air, Eighzo is noticeably rarer in this version than in 1.18.2-0.3.1.2 and later, where the chance was lowered to 0.5.

Ore deposit features

Ore deposits are added to every biome except the Nether and the End, at the "Underground Ores" step. Each one is placed on average once every chance chunks. "Disallow surface ore deposits" (default false) stops deposits from generating where they can see the sky.

Copper deposit top anchor bug: in 1.18.1 the copper deposit reads the Cinnabar deposit's top anchor (320) instead of its own "Copper Ore Deposit Top Anchor" (112), so copper deposits can generate up to Y 320 and changing the copper setting has no effect. This was fixed in 1.18.2.

Crude Oil features

Oil features are added to every biome except the Nether and the End, at the "Lakes" step, between the bottom and top of the world.

FeatureChance (1 in N chunks)
Surface Crude Oil lake144
Underground Crude Oil lake16

Rice

Rice is placed once every 32 chunks on average, in every biome except the Nether, the End and oceans (oceans can be enabled with "Generate Rice in Oceans"). A rice plant is only placed where the chosen block is empty and has water directly below it.

Rice height bug: the intended range is Y 48 to 320, but in 1.18.1 the top anchor setting was registered under the same config name as the bottom anchor ("Rice Bottom Anchor"). Both therefore read the same value, which defaults to 320, so every attempt is made at Y 320, where there is never water below. As a result, rice should almost never generate naturally in 1.18.1 with default settings. Changing "Rice Bottom Anchor" moves both ends of the range together, so rice can only ever be attempted at that single height (for example 63, the block above sea-level water). This was fixed in 1.18.2, which has separate "Rice Bottom Anchor" and "Rice Top Anchor" settings.
